Meet the Doctor
Juergen Winkler
MD, ABIHM, ABOIM
Juergen Winkler, MD, ABIHM is presently practicing at Quantum Functional Medicine in Carlsbad, CA, which he founded in July of 2012.
In 2005 he was the co-founder of Genesis Health Systems (Integrative Cancer and Medical Treatment Center) located in Oceanside, CA.
He has been a featured speaker for: the NSCC Women’s Health Seminar, Annual IPT/IPTLD Integrative Cancer Care Conference (Multiple years), Health Freedom Expo 2011 & 2012, the Japanese Society of Oxidative Medicine in Osaka Japan, ACOSPM 2010 & 2011 conferences, NSCC Health and Wellness Series 2013, and various other events.
He is the physician author of Chapter 5 in the Defeat Cancer book, and has been a featured physician in the Townsend Letter.

Nicole des Coteaux
RN, BSN, PHN
Nicole (Nicki) is an outstanding, skilled and compassionate nurse who always goes a step beyond expected. She has been a registered nurse in the North County San Diego for 21 years, several of which have been spent here on our staff. We are all extremely excited to have her as our lead RN, as she is truly a blessing to all. Patients often note how gentle she is in starting an IV. Her precision and gentle touch comes from extensive experience.
Joana Bates
Medical Assistant / Med. and Treatment Rooms Logistics Coordinator
Joana is an amazing young lady, extremely wise and talented beyond her years. She has been working with Dr. Winkler since 2011. Jo is the Coordinator for our Med. Room and Treatment Rooms, as well as serving in the capacity of MA. Her professional, caring ways bring a special comfort to each patient as she cares for them. Our team is very lucky to have her as a member, and we most certainly would be lost without her!
Katina Mays
Front Desk MA
Katina handles a multitude of projects with the greatest of ease as she greets each person who enters the clinic with her sweet smile. She has a gentle way of putting patients and their family members at ease, as her joy shines through each interaction. Katina is not only Dr. Winkler’s scribe and back-up for our front desk receptionist, but she is also our highly trained Medical Assistant entrusted with in office specialty testing and patient follow-ups.
Jan French
Executive Assistant
Jan is AWESOME in all ways! She is an excellent organizer, a skilled multi-tasker who joyfully serves the staff and patients each day. Her calm, peaceful spirit sets a tone for everyone in the clinic, as she uses her vast experience, wisdom, and discernment to carry out a wide range of projects. She is well qualified to handle any assignment that might come her way, and we are extremely blessed that she has chosen to join our Staff!
Jan Funchess
Communications Director / Clinic Administrator
Jan earned her Bachelor’s degrees from Missouri Western State University and brings unique skills and caring gleaned from 41 years of experience in various roles of Director, Administrator, Educator and Counselor. She is a member of AACC and has worked with Dr. Winkler since 2009 in various capacities: Office Manager, Lifestyle Counselor, Patient Coordinator, Clinic Administrator and now as Communications Director. She also serves on the advisory board and as a guest speaker for the Vista Adult School Medical Program. Jan is always happy to help and loves interacting with patients and their families. Like each of our staff members at Quantum Functional Medicine, she is an intricate part of our exceptional team.
Joan Giroux
Health and Wellness Coach
Joan is an International and National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She uses prayer coupled with her knowledge of health sciences, integrative nutrition, the Egoscue® method of postural alignment, and customized wellness practices to help people eat well, move well, sleep well and feel well.
Michelle Cox
RN, BSN, FNLP
Michelle is the newest addition to our clinical Staff. She is a Registered Nurse and Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner. Michelle is a true professional with a real heart for her patients and a calm demeanor to comfort them during each interaction. She was born and raised in Southern California. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at California State University, Long beach and she also has an undergraduate degree from Baylor University in Texas. Michelle has vast experience in nursing as she has worked in cardiac telemetry, as well as serving as a surgical nurse. When Michelle is not at work, she enjoys cooking, stand-up paddle boarding, golfing, snowboarding, hiking, and gardening.
Melinda Lopez
Receptionist / Front Desk Associate
Melinda is our newest addition to our administrative staff. She comes to Quantum Functional Medicine highly qualified to handle any and all situations with the greatest ease and a comforting smile. After 23 years in the Northern California Bay Area, where she raised her son (a gifted musician who uses his music for healing, health, and positivity) she returned to Southern California and has joined our team. She brings with her over 25 years in customer service in the fields of banking, finance, and real estate. Although her previous professional experience has not been in the field of medicine, she has always had a deep rooted, spiritually guided interest in health and wellness education, physical fitness, nutrition, kinesiology and all the functions of healing our bodies. Melinda has a great passion to help others (as well as herself) to seek spiritual and physical health. She delights in helping people to enter into (and grow in) a relationship with Christ Jesus. (Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. -Psalm 37:4 NIV).
Shelly Winkler
Support & Utilities
Shelly is a multitude of marvelous things! She is an exceptional Registered Nurse, a strong prayer warrior, and kind, understanding and wise support to patients, and their families, as well as to each member of the staff and our staff families. One of the many titles which she holds is wife and chief support to Juergen Winkler, MD. Together Shelly and Dr. Winkler have three amazing daughters.
Teri Lind
Registered Nurse (PRN)
Teri has been on our team since day one of Quantum Functional Medicine. She has been an RN since 1984. Having worked in both the traditional and the functional medical settings she brings a unique understanding and prospective to her position. She loves working with patients and it shows in her cheerful and tender approach to each patient interaction.
